The September Market and Black Pudding Championships!

Posted on

Our next Farmers Food and Craft Market in Sunday the 10 September 2017 - we have our monthly Farmers Food and Craft Market at Market Place and inside the Civic Hall in Ramsbottom.   It is also the annual Black Pudding Championship!!! This is literally a world famous event, the championship takes place on Bridge Street - it isn't to be missed!  There is also the weekly Car Boot at the Railway Car Park and many of the shops, bars and cafes are open in Town.

If you haven't been to the black pudding championships before what should you expect?   Well in this annual competition the story goes that it is in honour of ancient grudge between Yorkshire and Lancashire which is re-enacted by hurling Black Puddings at a pile of Yorkshire Puddings on a 20-foot high plinth.  You can come along and take part, Competitors have three turns in an attempt to knock down as many Yorkshire Puddings as possible (they are arranged in a pile of a dozen) and must throw underarm from a purpose built stand. The competition dates back to the 1980s but the Yorkshire-Lancashire rivalry is pretty much a legend, again the story goes that  during the Wars of the Roses the two sides exchanged fire with foodstuffs when their ammunition ran out!  Expect a lively, fun atmosphere and hundreds of puddings!  This has often appeared on TV, local news, the Hairy Bikers visited one year and This Morning.  It is something a little different and definitely worth a visit.
